The brickslips in this fireplace are not only pleasing on the eye, but they are also a little nod to this building’s past. They are made from the bricks that were taken out of the back of the barn to allow for the extension. Recycling and repurposing these bricks is an affordable way to make a bespoke feature whilst also reusing something that would have potentially ended up in landfill.

Bespoke Kitchen 

Having been situated here for well over a century, Richard and Helen were hoping this unloved and abandoned barn might unveil some treasures when they started to dig. They were lucky enough to unearth some interesting artifacts, including some old pottery jugs, and coins dating back from 1907 and 1917. The coins along with the pottery have been meticulously cleaned and can be found on display dotted around their wonderfully restored barn to pay homage to its past.

Brighten Up Your Day

All the floor tiles &amp; bathroom fittings are available to purchase at Marabese. The floor tiles are Chalon stone-effect porcelain tiles in cream.

Tiles and Fittings 

A key feature that Richard and Helen were keen to reinstate into the barn was the original roof trusses. They were replaced by steels so although they no longer serve a structural purpose, reinstating the wooden beams onto the vaulted ceiling creates an impact from the moment you walk into this warm and inviting home. The beams run throughout the first floor and give a rustic feel deserving of this restored barn.

Rustic Doors

Both the extension and the window openings were designed to minimise the impact on the original appearance of the barn. The smaller windows, that are enlarged versions of the original arrow slit openings, have ensured there is little disturbance to the original brickwork of the barn.  Mimicking this stye on the subservient extension provides an appearance that not only retains its rural character but also complements both the existing barn and its wider countryside setting. The clever design of the internal window recesses has allowed plenty of light to flood this beautifully renovated barn.

Arrow Slit Windows 

A derelict chapel with a small forest growing out of the roof wouldn’t be everyone’s idea of a dream home. Marisa loves delving into the world of interiors. She spends hours looking into trends in the industry. Rather than outsourcing all her artwork, she enjoys creating individual pieces like this one herself in order to achieve a high finish, at a lower cost. A painting this size could easily have cost upwards of four figures, but instead she has come up with this unique centre point for the dining area. She shares photos of her artwork through her Instagram, @oakappledecor, encouraging others to pick up a paint brush themselves.

Bespoke Art

This hallway with its vaulted ceiling and original wooden beams creates quite the impact when you walk into this stunning home. Marisa and Chris wanted to make sure the light fitting they used would fill the space without breaking the bank. Using their ingenuity, they designed and made this bespoke light fixture that hangs perfectly from the vaulted ceiling, providing both light and texture to compliment the beams.

It’s hard to believe that this striking coffee table with its gold detailing was fit for landfill before Marisa and Chris spotted it at a car boot sale and snatched it up for only £5.00. Painted, polished, and repurposed this coffee table has been up-cycled beautifully and works as a vibrant centre piece in this space. Its lively colour pops when surrounded by neutral tones. Up-cycling is a sustainable and affordable way to make unique pieces in your home whilst also bringing something back to life that would otherwise be thrown away.

In one of the UK’s most ambitious home renovation projects of recent years, Devon-born Rob starts a multi-year project to transform an abandoned concrete water tower into a million pound luxury home. Factory worker Rob takes on an enormous one-man mission to transform an abandoned concrete water tower in Devon into a million pound luxury home.

The Million Pound Water Tower

One original feature that Rob thought would have been sacrilege to cover up is the striking dome ceiling on the top floor of his luxury pad. The final result of leaving it raw is outstanding. But, the process of being able to have it as a stand out feature hasn’t been easy. Having been built in the 1940s, the dome structure has gone through a fair amount of wear and tear. It took a whole two days to sandblast and seal the entire ceiling.

From the start of his renovation, Rob knew he was going to do something dramatic and impressive with the original access shaft of the water tower on the top floor, and that was to create a dining table with the shaft as its base, becoming the core of his unique home. Once he finalised his glass centred design, he finished the table with an industrial look of polished concrete, but he didn’t stop there. Ever the perfectionist, Rob knew he wanted a sleek industrial design to flow effortlessly throughout his home. He replicated the on-trend polished concrete and made his own bespoke coffee table to match. Making your own furniture is an affordable way to make bespoke pieces that won’t break the bank but leave a memorable impression on your guests.

Industrial Concrete Table 

Rob’s never been afraid to make a statement and has made countless bold design choices to make his renovation stand out. The all-white-bath trend is being upstaged by the sumptuous black design of Rob’s luxurious en suite. He’s created a moody space allowing a feel of intimacy in this spacious room with its double shower and countertop basins. After months of sourcing black tiles, basins and even a black toilet, he didn’t stop there, he’s even managed to source some black loo roll to complete the all-black space.

All-Black Bathroom 

Rob was alone on site when he was removing the external beads off the main bathroom’s large pane of glass from the window. The glass had cracked during the fitting and was being replaced later that day. Just as Rob removed the last bead, a gust of wind blew the glass out with force and knocked Rob from the top of the 18 ft scaffolding tower. The glass weighs 120kg, had it landed on Rob, it could have been fatal. Rob had numerous fractures to his tibia and a larger spiral fracture going up the same bone. Rob underwent a three hour operation where they inserted both plates and screws. He spent a couple of weeks in a cast and then had to wear a boot for 4 weeks. Rob is grateful to his friends and family who rallied round to help him finish the water tower whilst he was recovering.

This Häcker kitchen retails at an eye-watering £52,000. Through some savvy sourcing, Ben was able to snap it up through an ex-kitchen display retailer for just £12,000. Ben’s achieved a high-end look without blowing the budget.

High End Kitchen

Farmer turned civil servant Ben is turning his back on city life and heading back into the countryside to take on an ambitious renovation. With a traditional red telephone box in his garden, Ben couldn’t resist adding another nod to the big city with his personalised London Underground wall mountable sign that he found on Ebay.

Mary Berry, Fanny Craddock, and Nigella Lawson.Having planned to have this artwork commissioned since before the build started, Ben couldn’t be happier with this Andy Warhol style artwork, designed by Zed Gregory. His plan to inject a feeling of colour to contrast with his monochrome kitchen, certainly does just that!

The Three Graces

This lamp from Mybotanica is its own mini-ecosysem! The closed system creates a humid climate that keeps the plants alive.

Lighten Up

Little did Ben know at the time, but he’d bought a site of special scientific interest, which meant he had to have a consultation to check there was no rare species. The consultants found signs that bats inhabited parts of the barn, in turn, Ben had to create a space that the bats could relocate to, and what better place than an old reclaimed railway carriage! It fits perfectly in the corner of Ben’s garden.

The Bat Palace

With family being a big part of Ben’s life, he&#39;s sentimental in his ways. Ben wanted to add something into the structure of his new home that would reflect his family’s farming roots, and what could be more apt than instating two large contrasting stones from his dad’s hillside farm to frame the entrance of his grand doorway. It’s a small personal touch that makes this once derelict building unique for Ben; creating a home away from home.

When Ben found a horseshoe built into into this original wall of the barn at the start of his restoration project, he hoped they would bring him luck for the adventure to come. Ben couldn’t bring himself to throw them away, so instead he has cleverly reinstated them into his garden wall outside.

Isadora and her American husband Ben tackle the ambitious restoration of a crumbling 500 year old Medieval farmhouse in Devon. Dora wanted to create a unique timeless space in her office that showed off her vibrant and daring style. She executed it with a modern twist by contrasting a velvet jade sofa with a coral pink ottoman. Both items sourced from Wayfair.

Ben and Dora opted for a reconditioned electric AGA refurbished by Prestige Cookers to replace the original gas AGA they were unable to restore. They saved themselves thousands of pounds by going for a refurbished model. The Aga is renowned for its cast iron ovens and traditional hotplates and it is ready to cook the moment you are. It creates a cosy atmosphere by gently putting warmth into the room - perfect for the couple’s dogs to curl in front of on cold Devon evenings. Dora got her wish of a traditional working AGA but Ben still isn’t convinced. As a compromise, they have also installed a Belling hob and oven for Ben. Some of you eagle-eyes viewers may have already spotted it. If you look closely, you’ll see the wallpaper in Ben’s office is in fact the Marauder’s map from the Harry Potter Series - it even glows in the dark. <h5>FUN FACT</h5>The owners of Longlands have peppered their house with Harry Potter easter eggs. This includes a light shade over the dining table and a flying key ornament attached to the original wooden beams in the kitchen. Two of their dogs are even called Griff and Snitch.

Dora and Ben’s bespoke kitchen is designed and installed by Wisteria Kitchens. Based in Newton Abbott, the independent company are local to the Tudor house, this was a huge plus for Dora who wanted to utilise skilled workers close by. The tailored design meant the couple were able to incorporate the original beams of the house into the style of the traditional kitchen. They finished the look off with a rustic glass splash back from Clearly Glass Ltd.
